Before and after fractional laser: a care guide
How well fractional laser works depends a great deal on care before and after. This guide walks through it day by day.
In this article
Fractional laser creates tiny columns of heat in the skin, which set off its natural repair process. How well it works depends a great deal on how you care for your skin before and after. This guide covers the general steps; your physician’s instructions always come first.
Who it is for
Physicians usually consider fractional laser for uneven texture, acne scars, fine lines and enlarged pores. At the consultation they look at your skin type, any history of pigmentation and the medicines you take, then set the device and the number of sessions.
Two weeks before
- Stay out of direct sun, avoid tanning and wear sunscreen every day.
- Stop retinoids and strong exfoliants a few days before, as your physician advises.
- If you get cold sores, tell your physician; they may prescribe a preventive medicine.
- Bring a list of the medicines and supplements you take.
On the day
Arrive with clean skin and no makeup. A numbing cream is applied first, and the treatment itself usually takes less than an hour. Warmth and a prickling feeling during it are normal.
Most of the result comes from how you care for your skin in the days that follow.
The first week after
What is normal
Redness like a sunburn, mild swelling and a tight feeling are normal for the first few days. Skin may darken slightly and then flake.
Daily care
- Wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry.
- Use the moisturiser your physician recommended, often.
- Do not pick or scratch the flaking skin.
- Skip makeup until your physician says it is fine.
- Stay out of the sun, and once your physician allows it, wear sunscreen daily.
Recovery at a glance
| When | What to expect | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 2 | Redness, warmth, mild swelling | Cool compress, gentle washing |
| Days 3 to 5 | Darkening and flaking | Moisturiser, no picking |
| Days 6 to 10 | Smoother skin, light pink tone | Daily sunscreen |
When you will see results
Texture usually improves over a few weeks and keeps improving for several months as new collagen forms. Most people need a few sessions spaced apart; your physician plans them with you.
